Collective Individuality? Making ASU a better place.

June 27th, 2008 · No Comments · Asunited

The 2007-2008 year was a good year for me at ASU. Our sports teams did well, our college is growing, and most importantly, there are still tons of beautiful women. We have a lot of things at ASU to like. Our large student population has allowed for diverse activities to spring up around the campus. Even casual observers would notice the influx of multi-national students to ASU. With them has come an ever increasing trend of new interests. Take for example the cricket games you can find on the tennis courts, largely run and coordinated by students of Indian descent.

Some of the most notable changes to ASU have been in the number and grandeur of our buildings. New student housing facilities, both private and public, have been built and are continuing to be built. We have many options at ASU. With great programs ranging from accounting to journalism we are eager consumers in a college rich with possibilities.

I think that in order for ASU to continue its ascent to greater status students must be active in promoting standards through their actions. This is not a call for more “free-hugs” goons at the MU or the “frothy-mouthed” religious loons; rather, this is a call for the individual decisions that students make to be crafted towards guiding the student body as a whole. Take for example textbooks. We can buy books from the ASU Bookstore (on campus), The College Store (on Rural Rd), or the Student Book Center (on College Ave). The question now is, how can we better the student body as a whole regarding textbooks? The answer is simple. Sell back your textbooks. I know that we feel ripped when we sell a book back for 10-15% of what we bought it at, but the fact is a greater supply of used textbooks equal a lower purchasing price for other students. If all students sold back their books than each student (including those who sold them back) will be more likely to find their books used, and likewise cheaper. This isn’t the only option though. Virtual marketplaces offered by craigslist, facebook, and amazon allow for individuals to sell their books directly to next semesters students. This is the best way because both the seller and the buyer receive better deals than going through the bookstores.

There are many other things that we can collectively as individuals make better at ASU. These include: Louder crowds at sports events, bigger parties, better grades, better knowledge and participation in local events (like the free performances they have at Gammage Auditorium), and many other things. I just realized it, but this article has a strong resemblance in tone to the title of our blog…… until next time. Hasta Luego… Sa susunod na lang…..
