Annual Pat’s Run a Huge Success Again in 2012

Sun Devil pride could be felt everywhere on Saturday as the day included the 9th Annual Pat’s Run, the Sun Devil Football Spring Game and a Sun Devil Softball victory over Stanford. Pat’s Run started the day as 28,000 runners and walkers participated in the event.  Later in the day a total of 5,142 Sun Devil fans saw a glimpse of first-year Head Coach Todd Graham’s football team in the Spring Game at Sun Devil Stadium/Frank Kush Field. The Spring Game concluded the spring session for Sun Devil Football who will return to action in August.

Your Sun Devil Softball team capped off Saturday with a victory over Stanford and swept the series over the weekend. Katelyn Boyd led the way for the Sun Devils and was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the week of April 16th-22nd.  This is Boyd’s third career conference weekly honor and ASU’s 68th. Don’t let the awards stop there! Vote for Katelyn Boyd for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award! To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. Vote every day for Katelyn here! The Sun Devil Softball team travels to Washington April 27th-29th to take on the Huskies. Friday’s game will be on Fox Sports, check local listings for the channel.

Sun Devil baseball is on the road again to face Washington State in a three-game Pac-12 series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Wash. April 27th – 29th. First pitch on April 27 is set for 5:30 p.m., while the game on April 28th is slated for 2 p.m. and the series finale on April 29th is set for 12 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live by Sun Devil Sports Network on The Fan AM 1060.

Head Coach Tim Mickelson takes Sun Devil Men’s Golf to the Pac-12 Championships this weekend in Corvallis, Ore. The Sun Devils will play 36 holes on Friday, April 27th followed by 18 on Saturday and Sunday. Coach Mickelson is in his first season with the Sun Devils and his roster is stocked with youth as six of the nine players are freshmen. The Pac-12 Championships mark the return of Mickelson to Corvallis where he concluded his collegiate career at Oregon State.

Sun Devil Men’s Track and Field senior Chris Benard earned his second Pac-12 Conference Field Athlete of the Week honor in three week, while the Arizona State men reached their highest USTFCCCA computer ranking in school history as well. Benard broke the Sun Devil record in the triple jump on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays with a leap of 16.74m (54-11.25) to take second in the Elite section of the event in Walnut, Calif.  The jump downed Deon Mayfield’s 30-year-old record in the event of 16.72m (64-10.50) and placed Benard in the No. 1 spot in the nation in 2012, as well.

State Farm recognized 18 Sun Devil student-athletes as part of the State Farm Territorial Cup Series Good Neighbor Team this week. Sun Devil Athletics honored the student-athletes on Monday, April 23rd, in the Student-Athlete Carson Center. The annual scholarship program recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes at the University of Arizona and Arizona State University who exemplify the true spirit of the collegiate athlete. To be eligible for the award, student athletes had to have a 3.0 grade point average and complete community service hours during the school year. Each school has 18 representatives who competed in the State Farm Territorial Cup Series rivalry. These student-athletes are being honored for their achievements in the classroom, on the field and in their community. $20,000 is being donated to the Sun Devil Club by State Farm on behalf of the student athletes who were recognized.
