March 14th, 2012 · No Comments · Sports

Two more Sun Devils are NCAA Division I National Champions! Congratulations to Sun Devil Men’s Track and Fields’ Jordan Clarke and Mason McHenry who won national titles in the indoor shot put and the 800-meter respectively. Clarke earned his second NCAA Championship and first indoors in the event, launching his final throw of 20.86m (68-05.25) for a new career best and the second-best throw in Sun Devil indoor history. It is his second career NCAA title after winning the outdoor championship in 2011. McHenry’s victory marked the first time in Sun Devil Athletics history the 800-meters indoors or outdoors that a Sun Devil had earned the NCAA Championship. The great news didn’t stop there. Sun Devil Men’s Track and Field alumnus Ryan Whiting earned his first world title on Friday, winning the shot put event at the 2012 International Association of Athletics Federations, World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

The 15-practice spring session concludes on April 21st with the Spring Game. The Spring Game will be held in Sun Devil Stadium beginning at 1 PM and is FREE to the public.

The 11th-ranked Sun Devil Baseball team plays five games in six days for the second time this season as they host Utah Valley for a two-game home series on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to Southern California to open Pac-12 conference play against the UCLA Bruins in a three-game series over the weekend. First pitch for the weekday games at Packard are both set for 6:30 p.m. A group of Purple Heart Marines is attending Tuesday’s game and Corporal Nick Kimmel will represent these Marines in throwing out the first pitch.

Katelyn Boyd of the Sun Devil Softball team was named the Pac-12 Softball Player of the Week for the week of March 4th through March 11th. This marks the second time in Boyd’s career that she has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, both coming in the 2012 campaign. In the Sun Devil Softball record books, Boyd is fifth all-time in hits (254), third in home runs (57), second in RBI (216), third in doubles (48) and fourth in stolen bases (77).

Sun Devil Women’s Basketball has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2012 Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Sun Devils will open play in the WNIT on Friday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Stockton, Calif., to take on Pacific. The Sun Devils are making their 13th consecutive postseason appearance (eight NCAA Tournaments and five WNITs) after winning 20 games for the seventh time in eight seasons.

The fifth-ranked Sun Devil Water Polo team upset fourth-ranked California Saturday at home, 10-7, in a win that could be considered among the biggest in school history. Senior Alicia Brightwell netted three goals and Ianeta Hutchinson had 13 saves and the Sun Devils jumped out 3-0 early and held off several Cal rallies for the team’s first victory against the Golden Bears since 2009.  After finding the back of the net three times against #4 Cal on Saturday, senior Alicia Brightwell has been tabbed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Last weekend at Zone E Championships, seniors Elina Eggers, Constantin Blaha and Cameron Bradshaw qualified to compete at the 2012 NCAA swimming and diving Championships. The Sun Devil divers continued Arizona State’s reign as a perennial fixture at the NCAA Championships and on the national level. Since 1966, the program boasts three divers have won a total of six NCAA Championships and 39 All-Americans.

Be Well, Be Safe, and GO SUN DEVILS!
