Well…At Least they FOUGHT to the finish.

It is with a saddened and distraught tone that I belatedly announce the failure of our beloved, number 3 nationally ranked, baseball team to advance past the super regionals this past weekend. I think we were all expecting, or at least hoping for, a more satisfying result than the one we’ve been dealt. Yes, they lost. However, it’s not just the losing that hurts, it’s how they lost. The ASU men’s baseball team had not lost in 4 straight games in the post season. They were a perfect 4-0 trying to close out a “little hope” Fresno State team that had their backs to the wall after falling soundly to the Devils in the first game of the series 12-4. Fresno State fought back like any good team does and skimmed past the Devils in the second game of the series 8-6 handing ASU their first loss of the post season. No biggy right? We’ll get ’em tomorrow thought the devils as well as the faithful fans. Fresno State would have no part of it though.

The pre-game brought about bad omens that would eventually summon the downfall of our team. Brett Wallace and Ike Davis, both first round draft picks in the MLB draft this year, started fighting before the game? I mean honestly, they got in a skirmish! Actually, we can’t even call it a skirmish by definition. That means a MINOR fight that is often incidental. This was an actual fight where they went at each other and the team had to break it up. I mean seriously guys, I wouldn’t be so critical if you would at least start brawling with members of the OTHER team. But our own guys? That’s just ridiculous! I’m not going to lie I’m kind of embarrassed. I’ll forgive them though as long as they make up for it in the game though right? Well, both these guys had key hits in the game but the end result was one that gave us the boot out of the tournament and ended the season for the whole team. I feel the pain of all the players that worked so hard to see it end like that. That’s sports though I guess. You live and let die. Hopefully next year their will be a rebirth and we can watch them take it all the way to Omaha! Till then, I think baseball will be off the menu for our blog now. But don’t go away sports fans…football’s stepping to the plate in August with our recently revived basketball team waiting patiently on-deck.

So sad. I really wanted ASU to dominate both softball and baseball in one year! How exceptional would that be? I guess we’ll just have for the women to repeat, and for the men, for them to get their act in gear.

Don’t forget about our nationally ranked track team that has produced more natl championships than any other sport at asu this year and that will produce several olympic athletes at the end of this month

Oh definitely! I wouldn’t slight the ASU track team like that. You know me better than that Sandy.
