July is coming to a close and the start of classes and the fall season is just around the corner.
Today was Pac-12 Football Media Day. With 13 first place votes, our 2011 football squad was picked to finish second in the Pac-12 South. We also received three votes to win the inaugural Pac-12 Championship Football Game. Coach Erickson and Brock Osweiler took part in the Media Day activities and you can find a link to their press conference in the email.
Tomorrow, Coach Erickson will head to Bristol, Conn., to take part in the ESPN Car Wash. He will meet with ESPNU, ESPN.com, SportsCenter, GameDay, The Herd and College Football Live. Coach Erickson will also participate in live chats with ESPN.com, ESPN’s Social Media Pages (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) and a Twitter Chat with SportsCenter. Jason Kipnis became the 99th Sun Devil to play Major League Baseball last Friday. Kipnis, who plays second base for the Cleveland Indians, earned his first hit in the major leagues last night. It just so happened to be a game-winning walk-off! Congrats to Jason, we look forward to following your career.
Our Olympic Sport student-athletes have been busy in the offseason. William Henry, a sophomore on the track & field team, recently helped Team USA win gold in the 4x400m at the Pan Am Juniors. Diver Riley McCormick placed ninth on the 10m platform at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai. Many of our current and past student-athletes continue to compete in a variety of individual events throughout the summer and we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
We are happy to welcome Tom Ward to the Sun Devil Family! Ward, the 2011 NACGC/W National Assistant Coach of the Year, was recently hired as an assistant women’s gymnastics coach. Ward will join head coach John Spini and Kari Ward (no relation) as they look to get back to nationals next winter.
Congrats to our three Sun Devil alums who signed with NFL teams today! Best of luck with your professional careers!
