There is a rumor out there that just because it is the off-season that college athletics slows down… Here at Arizona State, that is certainly not the case!
First off, we are excited to welcome Coach Tim Mickelson as our new head men’s golf coach. Mickelson, who played for the Sun Devils for three seasons and was a member of ASU’s 1996 NCAA Championship team, arrives at ASU following a great run at the University of San Diego. A four-time WCC Coach of the Year, Mickelson built the Toreros into a national contender. As Lisa Love puts it, Coach Mickelson “is a talented leader, a knowledgeable coach and a dynamic recruiter.”
The U.S. Soccer Women’s National Team will take on France tomorrow in the Women’s World Cup semi-finals on ESPN at 9 a.m. AZ Time. Best of luck to Sun Devil Amy LePeilbet and the entire team!
At 6 p.m. AZ Time, be sure to tune back into ESPN for the 2011 ESPY Awards. You will not want to miss Anthony Robles accepting the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Anthony is additionally up for Best Male Athlete with a Disability and Dallas Escobedo has been nominated for Best Female Collegiate Athlete. Best of luck to both Anthony and Dallas!
Football is right around the corner and two of our student-athletes keep earning more and more preseason accolades. Vontaze Burfict has been named to the 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, the Bednarik Award Watch List, the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List and has been recognized by Blue Ribbon Magazine as the preseason pick for National Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to being on the Rimington Trophy Watch List, Garth Gerhart was recently named to the Outland Trophy Watch List. It should be an exciting year for Sun Devil Football and I know I keep getting more and more ready for the season to begin!
