March 7th, 2012 · No Comments · Sports

Your Sun Devils swept the Wildcats in basketball this weekend! Sun Devil Men’s Basketball dropped the University of Arizona Wildcats 87-80 in the State Farm Territorial Cup Series Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena. Not until the final seconds did either team lead by more than six points. The State Farm Territorial Cup rivalry saw one of its most epic showdowns in the schools long histories. In the end, the Sun Devils had just enough to take down their bitter rival. Carrick Felix, Trent Lockett and Jonathan Gilling all put up 21 points apiece, Gilling posting a career high. Toward the end of this season the Sun Devils have shown flashes of what they could possibly be in the coming years. The victory over Arizona showed they could play with the best of the Pac-12, not to mention sending the Wildcats back to Tucsan with a loss.

Not to be out-done, Alex Earl scored 11 of her team-high 14 points in the second half to help lift Sun Devil Women’s Basketball to a 70-63 win over Arizona on Saturday. With the win, the Sun Devils claimed the State Farm Territorial Cup Series point in women’s basketball for the 2011-12 season as ASU also defeated the Wildcats 60-45 on New Year’s Eve.

The Sun Devils have taken it to the Wildcats as of late. Men’s Basketball has won seven of the past 11 games vs. Arizona under Coach Sendek and Women’s Basketball has won 15 of the last 17 meetings against the Wildcats. Men and Women’s Basketball return to action this week when they travel to Los Angeles for Pacific Life Pac-12 Basketball Tournament.
